Directly copying package lists or configurations from the source server to the new environment (in-place clone) during Linux server migrations can lead to compatibility issues and performance losses.
The process includes creating a detailed inventory of current workloads, preparing a clean infrastructure on the target operating system version, and synchronizing files and databases using appropriate methods (rsync, dump/restore, replication). Functional tests are completed before traffic is switched to the new environment, and rollback procedures are prepared in case of potential failures.

As long as the running applications and packages are compatible with the target distribution, it can be changed. Instead of attempting an in-place conversion, a clean installation on the target environment followed by data transfer is a much safer and controlled method.
DNS records, firewall allowlists, IP address-bound licenses, webhook endpoints, and external integrations are identified and included in the migration plan before an IP change.
For data security, contractual terms, and cost considerations, the old server should be kept read-only for a period during the rollback window after the migration is completed.
